Individual Work

AFBC Working with Individuals

AFBC adheres to a form of coaching that honors the client as the expert in his/her life and work, believes that every client is creative, resourceful, and whole. Standing on this foundation, the coach’s responsibility is to:

  • Discover, clarify, and align with what the client wants to achieve
  • Encourage client self-discovery
  • Elicit client-generated solutions and strategies
  • Hold the client responsible and accountable

In the process of coaching, clients deepen their learning, improve their performance, and enhance their quality of life.

Coaching accelerates the client’s progress by providing greater focus and awareness of choice. Coaching concentrates on where clients are now and what they are willing to do to get where they want to be in the future.

Trustee Coaching

An experienced coach helps you get the job done while building/enhancing/saving family relationships.

  • Have you been a trustee before? What is your greatest fear about this role?
  • Are you aware of the contents of the will/trust that you will administer? If not, what is in the way of finding out?
  • Do you know the location of all of the important papers you will need to administer the estate? If not, what is in the way of finding out?
  • Have your elders talked to you and your siblings about their wishes? Have you and your siblings all heard the same thing?
  • Does your elder have a durable power of attorney for healthcare? Does the appointed person know they have been chosen to make those decisions?
  • Is there actually an agreed upon plan in place for the disposition of personal effects?

Landlord Coaching

Inheritors often find themselves in the role of “unintentional landlord.” When real estate have been held for many years as folks have grown into their old age, properties are often neglected. They can be a great source of income, but need work to get back to being a good investment.

An AFBC Landlord Coach will help you set up systems and processes for successful landlording and hold your hand while you get started.

  • How do you raise the rent without losing the tenant?
  • How do you pay for deferred maintenance?
  • How do I figure out the best strategy: rent or sell?

Estate Plan Coaching

An AFBC Estate Planning Coach will help you think through the impact of your estate plan on the family dynamic. The estate coach can also help you design your legacy: What do you want to leave your family other than your worldly goods?

Succession Coaching

Ideally this is done from the very early years of a family business. Healthy parenting starts when children are babies. Conscious, intentional parenting designed to raise healthy autonomous human beings—yields a potentially healthy family long into the future. It also has healthier outcomes for the family business, though it may not look like you had originally imagined. This is an important conversation for parents—especially if they have a business they would like to keep in the family. Coaching can be a very valuable way to help you get clear what is most important to you and your family and then create a plan to make it happen.

We at AFBC are grounded in deep understanding of Family Systems with wide experience in family business, family estate settlement, elder care and family lands management.

We don’t give legal or healthcare advice, but we point you to places for your own research or places to seek other professional help.
